Seminar 2: Icological Cities
Rachel ArmstrongBiography
Dr Rachel Armstrong graduated from Cambridge University with First Class Honours. In 2009 she embarked on a PhD in chemistry and architecture to pursue her long standing passion for evolutionary processes and their environmental impact. Rachel's current work involves the development of a new group of materials for architectural practice that have some of the properties of living systems but are not 'alive'. She aims to use a qualitatively different approach to building construction and open up the range of tools for the built environment in a much broader context. She was awarded a TED Fellowship and a Senior TED Fellowship, and she is a member of the RESCUE "Collaboration between the natural, social and human sciences in global change research" Working Group, a body of European experts making recommendations to the EU for strategic investment for interdisciplinary/scientific research on climate change.
Presentation Synopsis
Instead of accepting that design for cities is either informed by technology or by trying to design them by imposing a highly aestheticized form of ‘Nature’ or sustainability; Rachel will propose a new paradigm for ‘holistic’ urban development in the 21st Century. How can we design natural habitats which will share the same chemical operating system as ecosystems and may even increase their fertility?
