Doha and Qatar

The skyline of Doha has been transformed in recent years from a quiet centre of pearl fishing to a modern metropolis, where skyscrapers jostle for attention. This reflects the huge changes that have come due to the immense wealth of natural reserves of oil and gas that Qatar enjoys. Today, Doha is fast becoming one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the Gulf since with only a 250,000 of the country’s population being native Qataris, there is a need to bring in a large number of foreign workers and expatriates from other Arab countries, the Indian Subcontinent, from Europe, the USA and Asia.

Now one of the World’s richest countries according the Forbes list in 2010, and home to the 2022 Fifa World Cup, Qatar is rapidly expanding its infrastructure and is poised to continue the breathtaking pace of it’s expansive building programme.

Climate

Like most of the countries in the Arabian Gulf, Qatar has a long summer period stretching from May to the end of September with alternating dryness and humidity. Temperatures can reach 50 ° C (122 ° F) in the height of summer, but are more typically around 38 ° (100 ° F) by mid September.

Qatar uses GSM mobile technology, which means European cell phones can be used, although call charges are high. They will also accept locally bought sim cards which are readily available from Vodafone and Qtel. Unfortunately, US cell phones do not work in Qatar. The standard electrical plug sockets are three pin 240 volts as per the UK. American devices should not generally be used in Qatar, although most laptops will normally adjust their voltage automatically. Check with your provider.
